“If you have a small urban space and want to make a dramatic modern statement then the chic gardens could provide you with all the inspiration you need. Here emphasis is very much on the use of modern materials and bold planting to create a stylish striking and sometimes-controversial garden. In his garden called Perspectum, designer Alan Gardener explores his theory of out door spaces as 3D canvases.”

“I always think that gardens are a piece of art, it’s an installation as opposed to a garden in the true sense. So the idea behind this garden is that it’s viewed from a window at the front and basically it’s a picture on the wall that changes with the weather conditions cos when it rains, we get frost, we get dew, they stick to the Perspex and then the degree of transparency within the scheme alters so certain things are seen and certain things are not seen. The problem with the garden generally, is that being so minimalist it’s like a naked person, everything is on show”

“Inspired by the threat to the Mediterranean cork forests the Suber garden highlights the potential of cork as an unconventional under used and extremely environmentally friendly material for the garden. Designer Kate Gould has created an urban basement garden that’s perfect for relaxing in during the warm summer months. A curved polished concrete wall sweeps through ‘The Transit of Venus’ garden like a planetary eclipse and for designer Sue Goss the flowers are most definitely the stars. This seaside gallery garden provides a safe harbour for Falmouth Students creative work. The Children’s Society garden takes its inspiration from the song ‘Lust for Life’ by Iggy Pop.”

“We started with a Iggy Pop track which was the drum loop of that and just tried to enhance that in some way with a programmed water ark. Just to try and get a bit of the energy of the song really so it fills an invigorating space rather than a restful place, and these three bubbles that you see are from a Roald Dahl story the BFG, the big friendly giant, which is dream bubbles through a pipe.”
