Education & the RHS
Bursaries
The RHS offers a number of bursaries each year to assist horticulturists in financing specific projects, including overseas travel.
From various endowments funds are administered under the following:
- The Blaxall Valentine Bursary
- The Coke Trust Awards
- The E A Bowles Memorial Bursary
- The Jimmy Smart Memorial Bursary
- The Osaka Travel Awards
- The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Bursary
- The RHS Financial Awards
The Coke Trust Awards and RHS Financial Awards - which include The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Bursary - are available for a wide range of projects closely associated with improving horticultural knowledge and experience. The Blaxall Valentine Bursary and the Jimmy Smart Memorial Bursary are for plant-study expeditions, the Osaka Travel Awards give horticulturists from the UK and Japan the opportunity to study in each other's countries and the E A Bowles Memorial Bursary is to aid a project on the work and interests of E A Bowles.
Eligible proposals must be closely identified with horticulture, and include study visits, practical horticultural projects such as training placements or working in a plant nursery or botanic garden (including job exchanges), plant study/collecting expeditions, conference attendance, minor research projects and taxonomic studies. Fees for educational courses are not eligible.

The Dawn Jolliffe Botanical Art Bursary
Established in June 2005, this bursary is to be awarded annually by the RHS Bursaries Committee in association with the RHS Picture Committee to assist a botanical artist to exhibit at one of the RHS shows, or to travel in order to paint and/or draw plants in their natural habitats. Preference will be given to artists who are not yet established. The value of the award will be up to a maximum of £1,000.
All artists are required to submit work to the RHS Picture Committee for approval before they are accepted as an exhibitor at the show. Please note: For publicity purposes, candidates who are successful in receiving an award will be requested to provide copies of their artworks for use in RHS publications and on the website. The copyright to all artworks produced would be retained by the artist and all reproductions of the works would be credited wherever possible.

RHS Photographic Committee Bursary
This bursary is awarded to photographers who are new to the business towards the cost of mounting an exhibition of photographic work at the October London Flower Show.
A £500 fund is available annually, to be divided between two or more photographers. Potential applicants should apply to the Secretary of the Photographic Committee. All photographers are required to submit work to the committee for approval before they are accepted as an exhibitor at the show.
Please note: For publicity purposes, candidates who are successful in receiving an award will be requested to provide copies of their images for use in RHS publications and on the website. The copyright to all artworks produced would be retained by the artist and all reproductions of the works would be credited wherever possible.
How to apply for bursaries
The RHS Bursaries Committee considers applications four times a year and closing dates are 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 24 December. Projects completed or underway at the time of the Committee's meeting are not normally eligible.

This offers financial aid towards a year of study in fields related to horticulture, botany, landscape architecture and environmental studies.
