A town garden inspired by the notorious Roman festival of indulgence. Saturnalia is linked to the worship of the god Saturn and celebrates the winter solstice and the coming of the new agricultural year. The main imagery of the garden reflects the rich hot colours revered by the ancient Romans - red, purple, gold - with representation of the planet Saturn and its rings forming the planting structure and surrounding boundaries. Included are plants, either with names suggesting images of astronomical or celebratory themes, or those favoured by the ancient Romans.

The rings of Saturn form the basis of the planting plan with tall climber and shrubbery covering parts of a perimeter fence. Clipped architectural plants represent some of Saturn’s moons. In a secluded side of the garden, a circular patio rests upon Saturn’s rings, featuring a stone seat and ‘wine’ spilling from an urn. A statue of Saturn stands nearby.

The Bracknell & District Gardening Club was founded in 1981 as part of Bracknell’s contribution to the International Year of the Disabled. Many of the plants for the garden will be sourced from members’ own gardens.
