A contemporary roof garden with a cottage garden feel using bespoke containers designed to fit a roof space. By using the small space to maximum advantage it has been possible to create an outdoor dining area which is linked to the indoor living space by use of the rubber flooring which can used both inside and out. A mirror creates the illusion of further space beyond. The introduction of curves into the planters, the mirror and water feature creates a natural flow around the garden by breaking up what would be angular areas of the garden. In addition the variations of height of the planters draws ones eye round to the view over the railings.
Key to the garden is the display of suitable plants that can withstand the extreme exposure to wind and sun that is common on most rooftop gardens, plus being happy in a container. The planting provides strong structural foliage for year-round interest and the restricted palette of colours, mainly blues and yellows with splashes of white to complement the grey of the steel containers, ensures a cohesive look to the garden. Plants include white Agapanthus, Clematis ‘Bill MacKenzie’, Eryngium planum, Salvia patens ‘Cambridge Blue’, Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’.
