This garden potager shows that you can grow fruit and vegetables free from chemicals in a small space. It is surrounded by examples of different ways to use willow and hazel, traditional methods and materials from Sussex.

The visitor walks through a hazel/willow arch covered in sweet peas, the word ‘Sussex’ planted in chamomile can be found amid the Horsham stone chippings. The entrance leads to the heart of the garden, a hexagonal Horsham stone slab surrounded by a herb bed edged with reclaimed local roof tiles, then stepped raised vegetable beds edged with willow hurdles. Behind these, fruit, vegetables and herbs can be found. There are two locally carved posts set in the beds each holding three corn dollies from which tomatoes and strawberries trail.

At the back of the garden, among sunflowers, nasturtiums and marigolds, hand-made willow obelisks support runner beans. These obelisks and hazel hurdles will be the subject of demonstrations in which the public at the show are most welcome to participate. There will also be simple demonstrations of how to grow your own fruit and vegetables.
