As part of their personal development programme, Girlguides are set a number of challenges to complete. This garden is the result of a hypothetical challenge to make a garden in a corner of a scrapyard, using available materials and suitable complementary plants.

The materials and plants are all being collected and grown by members of the Girlguiding movement, both adults and children. The garden is made from recycled materials - a water feature is made from the tyres of an old Mini, the garden 'fence' is cut from old tents, the patio is made from upturned wine bottles sunk into the ground and old cans serve as planters.

All the planting is in containers except where plants have crept in around the edge of the site. The general colour scheme is purple, 'rust', grey-black and green. Plants include violas, salvias, alliums and vegetables such as lettuces 'Lollo Rosso', 'Red Oak Leaf' and 'Merveille des Quatre Saisons', pak choi 'Rosette', radicchio 'Palla Rossa' and beet 'McGregor's Favourite'.
