Precious Gems
Designer: Sheila Greer
Contractor: Doug Scott Landscapes
Sheila Greer is making her debut at Hampton Court after giving up her job working in the legal department of her local authority when she realised she would rather work in a more positive environment - bringing pleasure rather than prosecutions!
Just as milestones in life are marked with jewels, Sheila brings the indulgence, value and sparkle of precious gems into this garden and helps highlight her own new life as a garden designer. Precious gems come in splashes of colour and these are reflected by vibrant areas of jewel-coloured planting set against a backdrop of shimmering rendered walls containing onyx quartz, and a curved seat which cries out for indulgent relaxation. Three tall stained glass triangles, designed by Roy Hubbard from Burnley and made by Ian Reynolds of Vertical Shores, rise in the heart of the garden reflecting not only the luminosity and shades of gems but also the grasses and textures of the plants around.
The central hard landscaping is of opalescent granite with its diamond chip sparkle. As a whole garden this is one which shimmers, reflecting luxury and richness. Planting represents emeralds, sapphires, amethysts, peridot, toumaline and garnet and includes a mosaic of plants such as Thymus Coccineus Group, Heuchera 'Plum Pudding', Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame', Penstemon 'Raven', Achillea 'Coronation Gold', Lilium 'Mona Lisa', Choisya 'Aztec Pearl', Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst' and Hemerocallis 'Little Grapette'.
Sheila, along with Ian and Roy, are all taking this garden as an opportunity to show just what they can do in their newly chosen fields.
