A roof garden inspired by Mondrian’s early work and Kensington Roof Gardens. Mondrian is best known for his abstract work of large matboards, rectangles in yellow, red and blue. Pervious to this, he was known for his paintings of singular flowers and trees. The design for this garden uses both aspects of this 1930’s artist.

The garden is based on a grid of overlaps with the deck entertainment area accessed by a floating step. The water circulates, falling down the wet wall into the rill through the plants on the edge of the deck into the pool filled with glistening glass spheres. The materials in the garden also reflect the delicate colours with limestone paving interplanted with lily turf and the bleached colour of the entertainment platform. Walls are rendered with one side also having wire mesh as trellis to create a sense of privacy.

The planting intends to reflect the sumptuous menu of the Kensington Roof Gardens’ restaurant Babylon (red and white wines and rich foods). A circulate glass window, designed by Yasemen Hussein, in the back wall reflects the art deco windows in the walls of the roof garden and Mondrian’s early work.
