The garden aims to bring native planting into an urban plot in a contemporary and stylish way for a young trendy couple. It is a way of supporting wildlife in the city. The garden includes a reflexology path, first seen by the designer in Japan, with a bubble foot spa for the owners to use in a relaxing and therapeutic way.
The main feature of the design is an elliptical shape set on the diagonal bringing gentle but formal curves into a rectangular space; this forms the deck area. The boundary walls are clean and modern but also welcome wildlife with its rectangular trellis of Hedera and Lonicera and a purpose-built bee/insect house which reflects the ellipse on the wall like a piece of modern art. Glass doors slide away for the owner to step onto the massage path.
Informally set benches surround the ellipse and provide a place to sit and use the foot spa. Nectar-rich and berry-laden plants provide food for wildlife during summer and autumn. Planting follows a pink, purple and blue colour scheme of contemporary blocks of flowers and is loose with plenty of movement. Wildflowers are given the change to flourish without competition.
