The River Unwound

This conceptual garden is based on a deconstructed river. The natural elements of a river have escaped their conventional layout and wind around the garden to create a fluid, organic design. The river elements of water, beach and bank are no longer confined to run alongside each other, but instead create their own shapes, intersecting and joining in a way not found in nature. The planting is river-inspired and creates a gentle, contemplative mood.
A river birch with its attractive, flaking bark, is a feature tree, providing a focal point for the garden. A row of willow form a screen behind one of the turf mounds, creating a sheltered, quiet spot for sitting and enjoying the garden.
Michelle Wake graduated with a degree in Garden Design from Greenwich University in July 2005 and is still in the early stages of a career as a garden designer.
