From a distance, this garden appears as a soft haze of pale inflorescence, rhymically punctuated by a mass of indigo spires and violet accents. Clouds of white umbels and the loose, open flower panicles of grasses introduce movement, creating a visual pause - a calm space for the eye to rest and observe. On closer viewing, this restrained plant palette is elegantly structured by a ‘barcode’ of flowing water rills that intercept the planting, extending out beyond the rectangular frame of the garden, and forming intimate viewing vistas through the space.
Contrast is introduced through the fractured ground patterns of quarried slate and strips of chamomile. Soft and sensual underfoot, as well as sweet smelling, the chamomile lawn awakens the senses. In this way the living material - the chamomile, the pale-stemmed birches and the soft, meadow-like strips of planting - sculpturally reinforces the garden’s linear, sequential composition.
Sarah Price graduated from the Oxford College of Garden design in September 2004 with a diploma in Residential Landscape Architecture. Sarah had previously graduated in June 2002 with a first-class BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art.
