Chalk (CaCO3) - what does it mean to you? Industrial cement works or Kentish chalk downland? Each has an important influence on this garden, designed by graduates of Hadlow College. The garden is designed to be viewed from multiple aspects and has the feel of being carved directly from a chalk landscape with angular pathways leading to a characteristic turquoise pool. Chalky slopes are punctuated with boulders and clustered calcareous planting. The chalk face is the dominant feature, providing a backdrop for moving images and a soundtrack. The periphery is held together with giant iron staples, providing an ideal environment for climbing plants, and creating a sheltered niche furnished with comfortable wooden seating. The Hadlow College garden aims to draw attention to this shrinking and important ecological habitat found in Kent.
