This is a healing garden following a traditional, courtyard design. The garden aims to provide a sanctuary for patients there who suffer from one or more of the following: Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Arthritis, Parkinson’s, Cancer, Heart Disease, Strokes. The garden has a comfortable, homelike environment with places for privacy and opportunities for socialising with other patients and with their families. It provides a place for outdoor activities, as well as offering a sense of security with plenty of accessibility. Planting provides sensory stimulation to increase alertness through scent, different textures, colours and forms, movement and sound through water features, and traditional planting and old artefacts to stimulate memory. The focus of the design is the well itself, specially commissioned for the garden, with the reverberations designed and provided by sound sculpturist Paul Mashall.

Independent Age is a charity that enables older people to remain independent.

After the show, the garden will be relocated to Independent Age’s nursing home in St Anne’s Well, Hove, E Sussex.
