This garden is in honour of Jean Patou, the famous Parisian couturier who opened his fashion house in 1914 creating revolutionary designs for the fashion elite. His iconic perfume, Joy, created in 1929, is one of the costliest fragrances in the world. No fewer than 10,000 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen roses are used to make just 30ml of Joy parfum. All the unique facets of the House of Jean Patou have inspired this garden.
Sparkling in the sunlight, the golden pond at the front of the garden leads the eye to the striking, tiered planting, reflecting the stepped hills of the Himalayas where Osmanthus is collected for Patou’s 1000 fragrance. The tiers are accentuated with handcrafted, copper-clad bricks, embossed with the Patou logo, reflecting the style of the perfume bottles. The subtle notes of Joy, rose de mai and jasmine, fill the air. The delicately coloured plants chosen and the cool, contemporary Perspex wall reflect the cutting edge design of the Jean Patou Parisien boutique. Sculptor Yasemen Hussein has created three sculptural windows in the garden depicting the ingredients of fragrances Rose, Jasmine and Champaca.
