The garden is formed from two fundamental ideas - one structural and one conceptual. The cantilevered main bed and two wings form the structural element. In liberating as much space as possible, designer Marcus Green was inspired by Henry Moore’s sculpture, Knife Edge, and the notion of two shapes apparently divided from one. The conceptual ideas of the garden centre around three key themes.
For Marcus, dance and gardens are closely related, each exploiting the joy of three dimensions. Within the boundaries of this garden the freedom of movement and dance are captured. The beauty of the human female form inspires the static shapes in the garden.
The garden’s colour scheme has been borrowed from the works of Rothko. Like dance, this artist’s expressiveness is vital and liberated.
Marcus Green was a contemporary dancer and gained a degree in Performing Arts at Middlesex University. He then went on to the London Contemporary Dance School and worked with different dance companies after graduating. While working at Harrods, he studied for an RHS Advanced Certificate that led to him leaving his personal shopping career and starting his own business in June 2005 - Marcus Green Horticultural Design. He is now at Inchbald School of Design taking the course in Garden Design.
