The Legend of White Snake

The Legend of White Snake

Designer: Mr Lu Zhen-feng (Hangzhou Blue-sky Landscape Group)
Contractor: Hangzhou Blue-Sky Landscape Group

This garden depicts a sad and moving Chinese story. The Legend of White Snake is the tragedy of an ill-fated romance between a white snake (which was transformed into a beautiful woman) and a scholar. The tragedy lies in the fact that the worlds of humans and animals were strictly separated according to Buddhist tradition, and so when the Buddhist Master Fahai realised that the scholar had married a snake, he tried with all his might to separate the two lovers. The white snake was finally overcome and buried beneath the Leifeng Pagoda.

This garden shows two symbolic scenes from the legend - the broken bridge and the Leifeng Pagoda. Visitors can imagine the story being played out in this vivid context. The garden is partly enclosed. In the garden’s composition, the pagoda and gates can be considered as the focal points, and the bridge, stone-paved steps and paths can be regarded as the lines. The artistic union of the points and the lines creates a changing and harmonious landscape.
