Sponsored by the Conservative Party Foundation, Living Values is both a meaningful and inspirational garden that embodies the idea of an independent Britain playing its part in a world with strong values. Words expressing these values are carved on wood within the garden, which has been created by Jeff Hewitt of Hewitt Landscapes.
British identity is represented by the cross shape of the design. Ramparts of yew hedging give a sense of protection, while allowing freedom within the boundaries. The mirrored doorway suggests both opportunity ahead and the enduring past. Yorkstone is a trusted and dependable material, a contemporary take on solid tradition. Its sense of permanence is echoed by the oak trees, which convey strength, and the steadfast oak blocks that represent the wisdom gleaned from human enterprise.
England’s green and pleasant land is represented by a parterre planted for harvest and punctuated by topiary shapes - clear cut, but also softened and evenly balanced - evoking a sense of pride and heritage.
The predominant colour is blue, synonymous with conservatism and with water. A pool provides the focal point, a font of hope and a worthy legacy for the next generation.
