In the 1950s, many kinds of cut flowers and vegetables were grown outdoors for sale. This fresh produce, from the gardens of England, was sold locally. Horticultural production was smaller in scale than it is today, and relied on people’s growing skills. Emphasis was given to the production of crops throughout the seasons, and it was important that both flowers and vegetables should last well and above all be fresh.

This design has been inspired by a small family-owned market garden, and reflects the golden years of the 1950s with its colourful rows of flowers and vegetables. An old glasshouse, potting shed and cold frames form the heart of the working garden. Containers full of flowers and boxes of vegetables wait to be loaded into the Morris Minor pickup ready to be taken to the village market.

In contrast to the regimented formality of the market garden, the family garden surrounding the village green, post office and garage is an explosion of colour, using many of the plant varieties that are ideal for growing in borders.
