National Year of Reading
Designer: Courtyard Garden Design
Sponsor: National Year of Reading
Contractor: The English Garden Company
The garden’s theme is an imaginative walk through the unexpected, inspired by stories from children’s books and from reading material for grown-ups.
The garden is enclosed by rendered straw bale walls with viewing points to give passers-by a tantalising view of the garden. Visitors are invited to enter the garden through the ‘bedroom’ and, from there, to follow a sinuous path through the garden, past a still pool, and back up over culverts towards the exit. There are places to read in the garden, both individually and in groups.
The garden aims to encourage visitors to celebrate reading, in all its forms, and that it will help to build a greater national passion for reading in England - for children, families and adult learners alike.
