Plants and wildlife are two of the best ways of teaching enquiring minds The Royal Horticultural Society is delighted to support the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, launched by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills on 28 November 2006.

The Manifesto is a ‘movement’ or joint undertaking that many different stakeholders, including the RHS, have helped to create and to which anyone can sign up. We have endorsed the Manifesto because we believe it will help to ensure that all children and young people have a variety of high quality experiences outside the classroom environment, as an essential part of their learning and development.

Ruth Taylor, Head of Education at the RHS, says: “At the RHS we believe every school child should experience a richer learning experience through gardening, and enjoy the physical and mental benefits that gardens offer. This is why we support the DfES Manifesto for Learning Outside the Classroom. More than 5,000 schools are currently supported through the RHS education programme and our team of educational and horticultural professionals, working with schools and garden visitors, continue to develop new learning experiences for children of all ages. In 2007, the RHS will take this further with the launch of the Campaign for School Gardening and show teachers and children how plants and gardening can bring learning to life.”
