Who drew Charles Darwin?

The mysterious caricature of Charles DarwinThe RHS is launching a nationwide appeal to identify the artist of a never-before-seen caricature of Charles Darwin, recently discovered in the Lindley Llibrary.

This unusual and somewhat eccentric caricature was uncovered following a flood at the RHS Lindley Library in 2006. Despite extensive research, the origin of the picture is still unknown.

Annika Erikson Browne, Acting Picture Library Curator at RHS Lindley Library, explains further: “The original drawing on display at the Lindley Library in London, is in watercolour, ink, graphite and etched highlights on grey coated Daler-Rowney paper. We believe it depicts Darwin in later life. The unusual paper and artist supplier’s stamp indicate the date of creation to be between 1875 and 1923; however, it is not known whether the caricature was drawn during Darwin’s lifetime.

“The work is unsigned and undated. We are currently investigating the origin of the drawing and would really welcome any information from members of the public who can help us.”
