Get growing and save money! |
Following on from last year’s drive to get people growing their own veg, this year’s campaign aims to reach even more people, by highlighting the fact that anyone can grow their own veg, whether it be small lettuces in recycled containers on your desk, or cauliflowers in an old bucket outside. Richard Hunt at the RHS said: “Getting people growing is at the heart of this campaign and we hope we are able to show that a space as small as a hanging basket or window box can reap rewards in terms of fresh tomatoes or lettuce leaves – which will save you money in the shops." In fact, based on an average lunch spend of £4 per day*, you could save nearly £1000 each year if you grew your own lunch. That's more than £38,000 during your working life – more than the average national salary per year in the UK**. To illustrate the fact you don’t need a great estate or even an allotment to grow your own vegetables, the RHS and NS&I are giving away around 10,000 lettuce pots over the coming months so members of the public can grow a lettuce at their desk or on their windowsill and save themselves some money this summer. John Prout, Sales and Retention Director at NS&I, adds: “Everyone can gain rewards from producing vegetables for the dinner table, or interest for the savings pot, and by working with the RHS we aim to help the nation achieve healthy finances as well as a healthy diet.” A dedicated microsite full of information about the campaign, advice on growing your favourite veg and a monthly e-newsletter full of hints and tips is available the Grow Your Own Veg website for anyone keen to get growing.
