Vegetable Man painting on display
7 November 2008
The Vegetable Man, or The Emperor Rudolph II as Vertumnus as it is accurately known, is on display for the first time in the UK. Painted around 1590 by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, it depicts one of the century’s most powerful and richest men in Europe from a collage of autumn fruits and vegetables.
The painting is normally housed in Skokloster Castle in Sweden and is one of 60 images in the Renaissance Faces: Van Eyck to Titian exhibition at the National Gallery, London until 18 January 2009.
