Alpine house opens at Wisley

Mary Hall, wife of Alitex Chairman Mark Hall, cuts the ‘ribbon’ with Peter Buckley, RHS President while Wisley Curator Jim Gardiner looks on.

A new metal-framed Alpine house, for displaying flowering plants of the moment, was officially opened on April 10 at RHS Garden Wisley. The glasshouse, which is home to one of Wisley's most continuously colourful attractions, was donated by glasshouse company Alitex.

It was completed in September and built on the same brick foundations as the original wooden house which had been in use for more than 20 years. It is taller than its predecessor and provides better air circulation, with shading and ventilation controlled manually.

The plants inside are checked daily and the best looking new ones brought in from the working glasshouses to ensure an immaculate display at all times.

This original house is now being used in the Alpine Plants Department working area (not open to the public) to give protection to a collection of Pleonie.
