AGM review

When the Society re-instituted the AGM in 1992, it was decided that all awards would be reviewed by its Standing and Joint Committees after 10 years.

The first such review took place in 2002. Every plant on the list was re-assessed by the appropriate committee; some 1,200 plants that no longer met the AGM criteria lost the award, while nearly 900 plants were added to the list.

Awards were rescinded for a number of reasons. Some plants (e.g. Allium moly) had been superseded by newer cultivars; some (e.g. Pyracantha 'Watereri') were more susceptible to pests or diseases than originally thought; others were no longer available, or only available as inferior stock. In many cases, plants were deleted from the list because they had performed badly during RHS trials.

The list of additions, on the other hand, included plants that had become much more popular and widely available since 1992, such as Verbena bonariensis, Phyllostachys vivax ‘Aureocaulis’ and Leycesteria formosa, as well as improved selections such as Magnolia ‘Star Wars’ and Ribes sanguineum ‘White Icicle’ (which superseded R. sanguineum ‘Tydeman’s White’).

The next AGM review is due in 2012. Once again, the intention will be to keep the AGM list as practical and up to date as possible.
