Penstemon
Herbaceous cultivars of Penstemon have enjoyed varying fortunes since the nineteenth century. Happily, they are again enjoying a resurgence of popularity, well-shown by the latest trial.

RHS trials
Following trials held in 1910 and 1931, the most recent trial of taller, border Penstemon cultivars concluded in 1993. As a result, 20 cultivars were recommended for the Award of Garden Merit. The Trial also permitted the resolution of some nomenclatural problems in the genus, and resulted in the publication of a key to the cultivars represented in the Trial.
Dwarf Penstemon suitable for the rock garden were the subject of a trial between 1994-1997, with two Awards of Garden Merit added to the six already held by dwarf types.
