On 11 April, we peeled back two corners of the fleece to check the progress of the radish trial.
The recent heavy rain and snow have compacted the soil a little. However, the radishes are still growing well and looking healthy - both above and below ground.
The trials team lifted a few plants of ‘Apache’ (long-rooted; trial entry No. 1; pictured left) and ‘Rudolf’ (round-rooted; trial entry No. 17; pictured right) to check the progress. The roots are starting to swell. From this assessment we think that in approximately two weeks' time the Vegetable Trials Sub-Committee will be able to come to Wisley to assess the trial, however progress will be checked again next week.
Jim England, Trials Superintendent, thinks the cold weather, despite the fleece, has resulted in a longer sowing to cropping time, as it will be around eight weeks by the time the trial is ready for assessment; radish can be picked in just three to four weeks after sowing.
