Finally, radish trial assessment day arrived!
On Thursday 1 May, from her arrival at work at 7.30am, Hazel set to pulling half a row of each cultivar. She then washed off the radishes in a bucket and piled them on the turf alongside the bed.
Jim followed along behind Hazel and laid out the radishes, while Richard cut a few of each entry for the Committee to taste.
The Vegetable Trials Sub-Committee congregated alongside the trial at 11am and Jacquie, the Trials Officer, handed out scoresheets and the Committee set to assessing the radishes using the following criteria:
earliness; uniformity; appearance (shape and colour); lack of pithiness; taste; size of tops.
This photo shows the entries recommended for the Award of Garden Merit.
Full details will be available once the Fruit, Vegetable & Herb Standing Committee have ratified the awards in late summer/early autumn 2008.
