On 3 March, the Trials Office team congregated on the roof of the Wisley Laboratory to sow our radish seeds. We have sown two of the cultivars made available by Thompson & Morgan; the long-rooted ‘Mirabeau’ and the round-rooted ‘Rudi’.

The containers used varied, with some of us opting for the ornamental look, others with black plastic pots (recycled from the Propagation Department), a growing-bag and even some recycled mushroom containers from the supermarket.

As the RHS promotes the use of sustainable peat alternatives we used New Horizon Peat Free Compost in our pots, the growing-bag was also New Horizon.

Some of us created 1cm (0.5in) drills to sow our seeds, while others scattered the seed on the surface and covered them with a light layer of compost. We then watered them in.

Some of us covered our containers with a cloche or plastic, to provide a little extra protection from the weather.
