Val's harvested radishesWe all went back onto the roof on Thursday, 1 May to harvest some more of our radishes.

Linda decided to harvest all of her entries, which she had sown very close together in a very deep narrow container. They made great bushy green foliage, which looked effective in the ornamental container, but the crop was just sufficient for single person household. Linda wondered if it was fanciful to think that the long root radish ‘Mirabeau’, which produced more large roots, was of a better 'design' for the container, than round ‘Rudi’!

Of the 40 seeds of each sown Linda harvested 12 good-sized and three small ‘Mirabeau’ and seven good-sized and 21 very small ‘Rudi’.

Val made the first harvest of her radishes, leaving some in the two pots she thinned out into to get a little bigger. To date she has pulled 20 ‘Rudi’ (11 from the original pot and nine from the thinned pot) and 22 ‘Mirabeau’ (15 from the original pot and seven from the thinned pot). Val has had a nibble of both cultivars and her observations are as follows:

‘Rudi’: quite a peppery nice radish flavour; the thinned radish had a stronger flavour. Both had white flesh and were very crisp.
‘Mirabeau’: those from the original pot had pinky flesh and were quite sweet. The radishes from the thinned pot had a stronger, sweeter flavour and white flesh. They were crisp, but not quite as crisp as ‘Rudi’.

Sue's radish harvestHaving harvested for the first time last Friday, Sue continued to harvest some of her radishes. She has been busy recording the tulip trial down on the trials field and so will be tallying up her latest results later.

The second row of Ali's radishes were ready for harvesting. As she is off on holiday at the weekend she will be taking them to her parents for them to enjoy!

Of 40 seeds of each sown, Ali's total yield has been 29 good-sized ‘Mirabeau’ and 22 good-sized ‘Rudi’. With some successional sowing at home this yield level would be perfect for a couple or small family.
