- Week 1: Seed sowing
Two weeks on from sowing, it’s Monday 17 March, the covers are off and we’ve been counting our seedlings and starting to thin them out. We all sowed 40 seeds each of 'Mirabeau' and 'Rudi'.
Sue has had the best germination to date with 40 out of 40 ‘Rudi’ seeds germinating and 37 out of 40 ‘Mirabeau’.
As Sue had quite a bit of thinning to do she decided to fill two extra pots and transplant the extra seedlings, it will be interesting to see how these perform in comparison to those that were not disturbed.
Linda counted 34 ‘Rudi’ and 19 ‘Mirabeau’ in her ornamental pot - although she ate a ‘Rudi’ seedling! She said it tasted rather cress-like and she now plans to sow some and cut the tops off to use them as sprouted seeds for eating.
Karen’s recycled mushroom pots have produced 33 ‘Rudi’ and 31 ‘Mirabeau’. Karen thinks, and most of us seem to agree, that the ‘Mirabeau’ have produced larger, greener seedlings. She found that the ‘Rudi’ seedlings were smaller and more yellow.
Ali’s growing-bag has produced 31 ‘Mirabeau’ and 27 ‘Rudi’. Ali didn’t need to thin her seedlings as she had sown them at intervals, although there were one or two double sown, so these were repositioned.
Val is yet to count and thin her seedlings, although she seems to have a good number of each cultivar.
