It's 31 March and unbelievably, it is now four weeks since we congregated on the roof of the Lab at Wisley to sow our radish seeds! In the last four weeks they have contended with forceful winds (so much so that Wisley was closed one day!), heavy rain, hail and even snow! However, they are soldiering on nicely; thankfully the area of the roof where they are positioned is fairly sheltered.

Physiological damageA few seedlings have suffered from physiological damage. This seems to be mainly affecting some of those in Ali’s growing-bag and while we have had some ferocious weather, we have to wonder whether it could be the seed leaves rubbing against the slit edges of the bag as they emerge. This shouldn’t have any detrimental effect in the long term.

The true leaves emergingThe seed leaves or cotyledons are the first leaves that emerge when germination takes place. As the seedlings are maturing now, one month on, the true leaves are starting to emerge.
