Limestone

The use of limestone for rock gardens goes back to Victorian times. It is only recently that awareness has grown of the permanent damage caused to rare wildlife habitats (and beautiful scenery) by the indiscriminate extraction of the rock. It is the so-called limestone pavements areas of northern England that are especially threatened, as the attractively eroded rocks are greatly valued.

This topic is discussed in a Conservation and Environment leaflet produced by the Science departments.
