The International Daffodil Register and Classified List (1998)

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

For their ready co-operation over the years the Royal Horticultural Society is indebted to the Daffodil Society (formerly the Midland Daffodil Society), the Royal General Bulb Growers' Association of Holland, the American Daffodil Society, the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand, the National Daffodil Association of Australia (formerly the Daffodil Society of Australia and before that the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria) and the Tasmanian Daffodil Council.

For regular and generous support in matters of annual registration the National Registrars are much thanked - Tony Davis of Australia, Ing. Vladimir Domsky of the Czech Republic, Dr Johan van Scheepen of The Netherlands, Max Hamilton of New Zealand and Mary Lou Gripshover of the United States.

In recent work on the Register itself, first thanks go to daffodil people the world over, without whose patient response to a mass of questions about origins, classifications and colour codes there would be no worthwhile Register. It is hoped that they and others will help put in the corrections and amendments that are sure to slip through the the finest of nets, and will point out any ambiguities or misapprehensions in the descriptions here appearing for the first time.

For sharing their data, a great debt is due to: the American Daffodil Society; the former Experimental Horticultural Station at Rosewarne in the persons of Paul Millett, Mike Pollock, Andrew Tompsett and the late Barbara Fry and F.W.Shepherd; Horticulture Research International at Kirton in the person of Gordon Hanks; and the Horticultural Development Council.

The Rev. D.Pett generously shared his research on Scilly Isles daffodils, as did F.J.Williams on J.C.Williams' daffodils.

John Blanchard gave crucial support in the entering of the botanical names. Peter Brandham ensured that the significance of chromosome numbers was properly explained. Reg Nicholl corrected and updated the list of originators and registrants.

Judy Restall valiantly and meticulously entered descriptions and parentages in the database. Liz Butler renewed the illustrations of divisions and descriptive terms. Mary Pascoe gave doughty assistance in the run-up to publication.

The design and smooth-running of the database, together with the programme for printing, were the work of Robert Hacker. Both he and Philip Gladwin of the IT Department at the RHS have given unfailingly cheerful support.

Much of the proof-reading was undertaken by members of the Narcissus Classification Advisory Committee of the RHS, whose comments then and at all stages have kept the Register on a steady course.
