Brampton Village Primary

Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire

Update News - Congratulations to Brampton School for winning Gold First Prize in the In Bloom Eastern Counties Awards for there gardens - category - Best Young Peoples Project for the under 12's.  Thanks to all the students who helped build the garden as without there dedication to the project this would not have been achieved.

Brampton School has created an Eco Garden with the aim of helping their children understand where food comes from, while giving them enjoyment and fun through learning and enhancing their life experiences. The garden was initiated by two mums of the school, and drew inspiration from the RHS ‘Grow Your Own Veg’ programme, the DCSF ‘Get Your Hands Dirty’ scheme and the ‘Year of Food and Farming’ campaign’.

The enclosed plot measures 8.5m x 9m and contains ten raised beds with sides up to 45cm high, plus an area for plants in pots. These will be used to grow vegetables, flowers and herbs, all planted and maintained by the children.

The building of the garden was greatly assisted by the local branch of Travis Perkins who provided both materials and labour through their programme ‘A 1000 projects, in a 1000 places, in a 1000 days’. Other sponsors contributed materials, including all the soil. A team from the local probation office doing community service provided labour along with many volunteers. The garden took just a week to build in October 2007, and is now open for business, tended by a regular gardening club.
