Michela says: “I hadn't explored the horticultural industry until in my 30s and I wasn’t aware of the creative diversity and scope that garden design brings. I fell upon it and I wish I could have delved in sooner, there is no looking back! I’m still developing my style, but I’m always trying to create new details in every design.
“Designing for RHS Chelsea, is a personal challenge without the constraints of a real client, so the scheme has allowed me to try out some details which I haven’t before. It’s also a space for learning and growing as a designer whilst collaborating and meeting others.”

Michela’s tips for designing a balcony

  • Experiment to see what environment you truly have on your balcony. It may be that a plant which doesn’t fare so well in your garden is actually quite sheltered on your balcony for example.
  • Utilise all the space, can you securely place a hanging basket so you can plant as much as possible without taking up as much floor space.
  • Think about how your balcony looks from the inside as well as the outside.
