Hagakure – Hidden Leaves

A terraced garden with strong Japanese influences featuring luxuriant shade planting within a clean, modern design

Artisan Gardens

From the show

  • Beautifully crafted hard landscaping featuring recycled bricks and different types of stonework perfectly integrated into the overall design
  • Large growing trees including acers and flowering dogwoods create a calming effect and shade with its under plantings of ferns, hostas and hydrangeas
  • Frosted glass screens backed by plantings of bamboo adding a contemporary feel
  • White gravel mulch around planting and white back wall provide unity of approach
  • The garden is held together and enhanced the red wooden framework

At the garden

A sacred and peaceful space away from the noise and stress of daily life, this garden is a place where friends and family can spend time together. People can sit on a tatami mattress bench under the shade created by the tree, which bears delicate white flowers. The atmosphere and nature are akin to the Saga Prefecture in Japan, the inspiration for this garden.

Hagakure means ‘leaves and tree shade’ and expresses living and dying.

The colour scheme is white, a symbol of purity and sacredness in Japan.
