Meditation Garden

Designer: Deborah Oakley (Art of Gardening)
Contractor: Art of Gardening

Art of Gardening’s Meditation Garden is a place of quiet calm for contemplation and meditation.

The creative planting plan and structural design of the garden follow the meditation theme. The focal points are a statue of Buddha, and six low individual oak seats set around a pebble mosaic that represents the wheel of life. A path planted with thyme releases scent underfoot. The garden aids meditation by stilling the mind and engaging the senses, heightening awareness and promoting inner peace.

Art of Gardening back-to-back gardenThe planting scheme is restful, using only the orange and maroon colours of Buddhist robes. It features an evergreen shrub structure, contrasting textures and shapes of green foliage, and unusual yet readily available architectural plants. Two Betula utilis var. jacquemontii trees provide height and interest. Playing quietly in the background is a sung Buddhist prayer.

The Meditation Garden is designed to be accessible, a usable day-to-day garden that is genuinely easy to maintain - an outdoor space for reflection.
