The Ocular Garden is inspired by the form of a human eye, with its elliptical shape.
This theme has been developed by the introduction of colour and the contrast of dark and light. The incorporation of an ellipse into a rectangle creates a cubist effect. The ellipse is divided into two juxtaposed halves, separated by a circle which could represent an eye’s pupil or iris.
The ellipse is made of plastic borders that have a steel effect on one section and are black on the other. The borders are formed into planters, with dark and light planting. In the centre of the ellipse, contrasting gravel is used to represent the white of the eye, broken up by a Japanese maple in each section. The garden is bordered on two sides by standard bay trees, continuing the theme of the ellipse with the shape of their leaves. Grasses are used to edge parts of the ellipse.
