The last Lord Egerton was a great adventurer. As well as his Tatton estate, he had another in the north of Kenya, in Africa. It is said that Lord Egerton “did more for Kenya than any other white person”. One of the things he did was to grow vegetables at Tatton, in order to produce seed to be taken out by him to his African estate for food production.
In Knutsford, Lord Egerton’s family founded the Egerton School for the education of local children. When Lord Egerton went to Kenya, he founded an Egerton School there for the children who lived on his estate. Both schools still exist, and have linked up to produce this garden that celebrates Lord Egerton’s African legacy.
Upon Lord Egerton’s death, the African estate became the Egerton University, which is still a thriving educational resource. It provides agricultural and horticultural courses for students from all over Africa to learn about food production and healthy eating.
