This garden is an interpretation of a classical Chinese scholar’s garden; a peaceful haven for retreat, private contemplation and study. It could form part of a larger garden, fulfilling the Chinese concept of small within large. Discreet areas within the design represent mini-landscapes - the large within the small.
The garden can be viewed from various aspects: through the moon window, the fretwork gate or the bamboo grove. From each of these aspects, the central pavilion provides a focal point, giving the impression that the scholar will return soon.
Many of the plants used are those venerated in classical Chinese art. The 'three friends' are included: the pine (symbolising strength and longevity), the bamboo (representing a loyal scholar who bends but never breaks), and Prunus (the emblem of winter and showing the potential for new life in spring). Rocks represent durability and steadfastness, and the Buddhist shrine and water provide a calming effect.
Part of the garden is sheltered by a Sophora japonica, the Chinese scholar tree. Miniature potted trees (or penjing) complete the effect.
