The Compass Garden has been designed by students at the Welsh College of Horticulture, who are in the second year of a garden design course. Fundamentals are learnt at an early stage, and this garden has been built using the basic elements of good design.

Welsh College of Horticulture back-to-back gardenAn indisputable fact is that north is north, and so the aspect of the garden is of great importance to design. The right plant has to be chosen for the right place. With this in mind, the garden has been designed around a compass theme. The compass is represented by the sunken seating area and pool. An arched entrance frames the pool and its surrounding planting.

Colour is also a fundamental design element, and the colour wheel has been incorporated into this design. There are four basic colours: red, yellow, blue and green; other colours are a combination of these. Plant colours have been selected to represent the aspect of the garden, for example the use of hostas and ferns in the 'cooler' north.
