The Derian House Garden is intended through its powerful design to provoke reflection on the art of gardening and man’s interaction with nature.
The garden is unconventional, with plants restrained and contained by gabions. The gabions are of varying sizes and heights, and have both a physical and symbolic purpose. Physically, they contain the plants and add hard lines and structure to the space, compartmentalising it. Symbolically, the gabions represent gardeners’ control and restraining influence on the plants within their gardens, particularly on raw natural growth and unwanted plants such as self-seeders.
To balance the harsh appearance of the hard landscaping and gabions, the planting scheme features strong, structural plants such as phormiums and cordylines, with softness provided by grasses and herbaceous perennials. The colour theme includes shades of orange, yellow and bronze.
This powerful design has been created to raise awareness of the amazing work done by the caring staff at Derian House Children’s Hospice.
