AstraZeneca has commissioned this garden to celebrate the pioneering medical research and development work carried out for the past 50 years at Alderley Park in Cheshire. The design has a science and technology theme.
The focal point of the garden is the central water sculpture, inspired by the double helix form. The sculpture represents medical research, whilst the water symbolises the giving of life. A hexagonal, molecular-shaped gazebo clothed in golden climbers encloses the water feature in a clear and clinical space.
The path echoes the modernist architectural lines of Alderley Park, and leads you on a journey from poor heath, through the gazebo, to good health. The planting also represents this journey through the use of colour, with dark purple gradually changing to pure gold. The planting heights and densities undulate to represent the emotional and physical peaks and troughs of poor health, with the planting beginning in low, dense groups and culminating in light and airy spires of gold and iridescent yellow.
