From Stockport to the Sea
Stockport has a very worthy Gold Medal record in the flower bed competition, and this year John Byrne is handing over the reigns as team co-ordinator, to Jacky Budd. The team is based at Stockport's own Woodbank Nursery, and is hastily playing catch-up in a bid to grow the bedding plants and prepare the bed in time for the competition.
This year the bed pays homage to Stockport's arterial waterway, the Mersey, which originates in the town and famously flows into the Irish Sea. Metalwork sculptures of a canoeist and leaping salmon have been commissioned to mark the Mersey's transition from commercial waterway to centre-piece of the Mersey Vale Nature Park.
