Hope and Aspiration

Hope and Aspiration

Exhibitor: HMP Risley
Designer: Paula Keenan
Sponsors: HMP Risley, City College Manchester

In its first ever entry at Tatton, HMP Risley’s cabbage patch-style garden is symbolic of a prisoner's journey through their incarceration, but will focus on the positives such as new skills and qualifications.

A scarecrow represents a prisoner, while two compost bins represent different phases in a prisoner's life and the opportunity for them to change. Overblown eryngium, weeds and brambles reflect the start of a sentence and cabbage seedlings developing into cabbages and then finally ceramic cabbages is symbolic of the prisoner’s journey through the education system.

Forget-me-nots meander across the garden marking the progress made by prisoners and climbing plants represent aspiration.
