Paradise Isle – A Western View

Paradise Isle

Exhibitor: Tatton Park Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08
Designer: Sam Youd

This ornamental garden celebrates Tatton Park’s Japanese garden, completed in 1912 by Japanese workmen for the Egerton family.

The Egertons were inspired to have the garden created, having visited an Anglo-Japanese exhibition in 1910, now Tatton Park’s current head gardener celebrates the fusion of eastern and western gardening ideas. Paradise Isle is the last imagined resting place of Japanese spirit and includes a ‘four eye’ fence tied together with traditional knots, reflecting the traditional Japanese style. Planting reflects the simple Japanese ‘stroll’ style garden within a set view, created by the placement of a single stone.
