Butterfly Journey

Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08 presents Butterfly Journey, delivered by Chester Zoological Gardens supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

This formal garden has been landscaped and planted to attract and benefit butterflies. Colourful plants have been used in drifts to create strong visual impact. The colour scheme is white, blue and purple - plants of these colours attract butterflies as they are valuable sources of nectar.

A reclaimed brick wall forms one side of the garden’s boundary and contains recesses that act as hibernation sites for over-wintering species. The wall supports fragrant climbing plants that attract butterflies and features a recessed butterfly shape. The butterfly theme is repeated in a number of other design elements, including a bronze-effect butterfly that spouts water from its antennae into a butterfly-shaped pool. The end section of a wooden greenhouse containing tropical plants represents a butterfly house similar to the one opening at Chester Zoo in 2008.

This garden has been designed to inspire and inform visitors about plants and features that they could incorporate in their own gardens to attract native butterflies.
