Ladies that Lunch
Nacro provides support to people who have homelessness issues, histories of offending and problems with substance abuse. Nacro service users have worked on this year’s garden, Ladies that Lunch, which looks at the benefits of keeping chickens.
Alongside the obvious benefit of having a source of fresh eggs, chickens are great recyclers and will eat a host of kitchen scraps, cutting down on waste and producing good quality garden compost. This garden has been designed for chickens and their owners, providing a supply of food including herbs, vegetables and fruit. To the rear of the garden there is a hut for the chickens to bed down and lay their eggs. On one side of the hut, a tree offers shade on sunny days, and on the other side a water butt collects rainwater to provide a plentiful supply for both chickens and plants. The planting of tall grasses gives shelter, and strong-smelling plants with gravel between them deter the chickens from wandering out of the garden.
This is a tranquil place designed for chickens and their owners alike.
