Tales from a Chinese Garden

Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08 presents Tales from a Chinese Garden, delivered by MIRIAD supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

For centuries, plants have been imported to the UK from China; around 60% of our garden plants originated there. This garden celebrates these plants, which come from all over China from the cold mountainous north to the tropical south; you can see both familiar and unfamiliar plants here.

Chinese gardens are places of rest and contemplation. The form of the inner ear, essential for balance, was the inspiration for the layout of this garden. While this is not a Chinese garden, it has been inspired by and reflects the colours, thoughts, views, philosophy and traditions of China.

The names in Chinese gardens are often poetic, such as The Pavilion of Rain Falling on Lotus Leaves. This garden incorporates references to poetry, literature, painting, sculpture and other Chinese arts: look carefully for the commissioned art pieces and literary allusions, find the dragon, protector of the garden and search for the ancient scholar’s seat.
